Accordingly, the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) will be opened only for commercial and special flights at the initial stage and this will be done in accordance with the recommendations issued by the health sector, Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said.
The Minister said a large number of requests were being received for the opening of the airport and that foreign airlines had been informed of the possibility of special charter flights arriving from December 26. He expressed hope that the air travel operations at the BIA, Mattala, Jaffna and Batticaloa airports will also commence soon.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the date for the reopening of Sri Lanka for international flights will be announced in the next few days.
