The Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS) of the Sri Lanka Transport Board launched an island-wide strike action with effect from midnight yesterday(June 11).

Secretary of the JSS Main Branch in Narahenpita, Ranjith Wijesiri noted that they were forced to resort to this trade union action as their requests have not been met by the authorities. Wijeysiri noted that they resorted to launching this strike after staging a protest opposite UNP Headquarters, Sirikotha and following discussions with a number of ministers.

However, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Transport Board Upali Marasinghe noted that he has not been informed about a strike and he had requested the employees to report to their duties as usual. Meanwhile, other trade unions have not made an announcement declaring that they would assist the strike.
