A fire has broken out at the base of the Singamale Mountain in Hatton.

According to the Hatton Police, the fire was reported on the Eastern slopes of the mountain at around 9.30am today (Feb 13).

The fire is rapidly spreading to the peak of the mountain due to the dry weather conditions being experienced in the area according to our correspondent. Hatton police officers, as well as Wildlife officers and area residents, are attempting to control the fire. Police believe that the fire had been set off deliberately.

The Singamale reserve is home to many endemic flora and fauna as well as ayurvedic trees and plants. It is also the location of the longest tunnel of the upcountry railway line.
