Passenger transport bus operators are advised to only transport 50 percent of the seating capacity at any given time, in order to maintain social distancing and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Speaking at the National Operations Centre for Preventing COVID-19, DIG Ajith Rohana said Sri Lanka Police placed 944 Road Blocks across the country, and 262 separate roadblocks to prevent people from crossing districts, which is prohibited.
The Deputy Police Chief said, if any person fails to follow the guidelines of the health officials, even when the curfew is not in effect, such individuals would be arrested and prosecuted in terms of the provisions of the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance.
He said with the relaxing of the curfew, the Director-General of Health Services vested powers with the Acting Inspector General of Police to take necessary action, in terms of the law.
DIG Ajith Rohana said so far 36,115 people were arrested for violating the curfew and 10,000 vehicles were seized.
Stressing the curfew in place is a “Quarantine Curfew”, imposed under the provisions of the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance, DIG Ajith Rohana said all those who violate it would be arrested and prosecuted, which would result in a 06-month prison term and a fine.
