The new faculty building of the Applied Sciences Faculty of the Eastern University was vested with the students and the construction of the new auditorium of the University was commenced under the patronage of the President Maithripala Sirisena .The President who visited the University was warmly welcomed by the students.The President who unveiled the commemoration plaque joined the event of starting of the construction works of the new auditorium.The amount spent on the faculty building composed with all the facilities was Rs.410 million. The amount estimated to be spent on the new auditorium is Rs.784 million.
The Ministry of Education, in order to provide solutions for the lack of boarding faciltities of the State Universities of Sri Lanka a project was implemented in 2015 covering all the universities and faculties.The total of buildings proposed to be constructed within the University system under the project was 162 while the constructions of those buildings are already in completion. The amount spent by the government on this is Rs.88,964 million, of which more than 86% has already been released.
The sum allocated for constructing 84 boarding facilities for the Universities and affiliated faculties. A total of 33,600 students will be benefitted by them. The construction of 78 boarding places was completed.Vice Chancellor of Eastern University Dr.V.Kanagasinham, presented a token of appreciation to the President.
Opposition leader R. Sambanthan, Member of Parliament Wijaydasa Rajapakshe, Governor of Eastern Province Rohitha Bogollagama, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Chairman of the UGC Prof.Mohan De Silva, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University Dr.Karunarathne were also present in this event.
