Six suspects, including two females, were arrested for possessing 13 kg of Crystal Methamphetamine (ice) by the officers of the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) in Niwandama in the Ja-Ela police area, the police said.

The police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the narcotic substance was seized during the police anti-narcotic operations conducted across the country.

The suspects were brought to the PNB office in Colombo for further probing.

He also said that there is a dearth of heroin in the market and the police investigations have shown that instead of heroin, the usage of ‘ice’ has become widespread.

However, the police are conducting investigations to arrest suspects who are involved in large scale drug trafficking, he said.

Meanwhile, a couple (a 37-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man) were taken into police custody for possessing cannabis during the vehicle checking duties conducted at a barricade in Naneriya in the Galgamuwa police area yesterday.

The officers had checked a Wagon R type car at the roadblock and found 4 kg of cannabis.

The couple to be produced before the Gagamuwa Magistrate today.

The police spokesman said the people who are willing to provide tip-off to eradicate drug menace from the country, to contact the police information centre via emergency telephone No. 1997.

He also said, based on the successful tip-off, the police will reward the informant.
