Selected inmates to be released on Vesak

The Department of Prisons decided to grant relief to inmates who are not connected to 33 offences which come under the Penal Code.

Commissioner-General of Prisons M. J. W. Tennakooon speaking to media said the relief program will take place to coincide Vesak.

Accordingly, all prisoners above the age of 65 and not jailed under the respective 33 offences of the Penal Code would be released.

Further, inmates who were languishing behind bars unable to pay their fines as of 07th April 2020 would also be released.

The Commissioner-General of Prisons went on to note another group of prisoners would be given a 07 Day annual pardon.
