Ranil Jayawardena appointed UK Trade Minister

Ranil Jayawardena has been appointed as UK Trade Minister by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

 

Ranil Jayawardena, who has been the member of parliament for North East Hampshire since 2015, announced this morning (Wednesday) that he was asked by the Prime Minister to join the Department for International Trade as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State.

Jayawardena was elected as the Member of Parliament for North East Hampshire in May 2015 and was reelected in 2017.

He has a degree in government from the London School of Economics. Jayawardena’s father is of Sri Lankan origin.

In 2019 then British Prime Minister Theresa May had appointed Ranil Jayawardena as her trade envoy for Sri Lanka.

Jayawardena’s role as trade envoy then was to support and enhance the development of Britain’s trade and investment with Sri Lanka.
