Nearly 200 children infected with COVID virus are currently being treated at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) in Colombo, LRH Director Dr. G. Wijesuriya said yesterday.

He said four of them are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), he said.

However, owing to a slight increase in the number of COVID infected children, another ward was allocated yesterday (26) for treating them.

As such, the number eight ward of the hospital has been designated to treat COVID infected children,
and so far, six wards have been reserved for this purpose, Dr. Wijesuriya said.

“The hospital was maintaining a maximum of 150 patients who were less than two years of age and up to 14-years-old. 20 to 30 children are being brought to the hospital with various illnesses, including those infected with COVID virus,” said LRH Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera

However, children who are under two years of age will be kept in the hospital and the children over two years will be shifted to home care. Meanwhile, children who are over two years old with mild symptoms will be transferred to other intermediate care centres, he said.
