President Maithripala Sirisena said today a free and fair election was being held in the country for the first time in its history because he had decided to remain neutral.
He said this was a key feature in a government which respects democracy.
“I have instructed security and police personnel to ensure a free and fair election as Defence Minister and as the Minister in charge of the police. This election will be historical because of my decision of remaining neutral,” the President said.
He said this at a function held at the Police Department Auditorium where he was felicitated for his service rendered as the minister in charge of the police.
