The time period granted to establish new political parties is set to conclude today.
Chairman of the National Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya noted that 74 groups have handed in their applications to form new political parties. The Commission has taken steps to establish a 7 member committee to validate the applications and to check if they meet the requirements.
The committee in question is due to examine the party symbols, names, policy statements, accounts, and all necessary documentation before recalling party officials to the elections commission.
