Arresting MP Ranjan Ramanayke without proper charges is a dangerous trend which could even affect media, UNP MP Mujibur Rahman said yesterday.
Mr. Rahuman told a press conference that making charges against Mr. Ramanayake after arresting him itself proves that it is an act of political victimisation.
“This victimisation could be directed on media and others in the future” he said. Also, he said opposition will stand against this kind of action if it continues during the coming days. MP Ashu Marasinghe, who also participated in the press conference said he was prevented from coming into Mr. Ramanayake’s house on Saturday.
“I informed UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that police was carrying out a search on the MPs residence when I heard about it. He instructed me to visit Mr. Ramanayake’s house and I set off immediately. However, I was not allowed to meet Mr. Ramanayake despite my explanation that I have a right to speak to my fellow MP,” he said.
