Cycle path from Colombo Port City to Diyatha Uyana; Construction to end in 2021

The Government has planned to construct a cycle path from the Colombo Port City access to Diyatha Uyana in Battaramulla.

Western Province Director of the Urban Development Authority W. A. G. K. Gunathilake said plans have been drafted for the construction of the cycle path connecting multiple cities from the Colombo Port City access to Diyatha Uyana in Battaramulla, reported the Government Information Department.

The project is aimed at benefiting school students, employees, local & international tourists as well as cycling enthusiasts and it would ensure a safe environment is created for those who travel using bicycles.

The proposed cycle path will span 23 kilometers and will comprise of a minimum width of 1.5 meters to a maximum of 2.5 meters, said the Government Information Department adding construction will commence from the Colombo Port City.

The cycle path will commence from the Colombo Port City access and thereafter will be parallel to Galle Road until Beire Lake, Colombo 02.

The cycle path will then proceed to Gangarama and to the Vihara Maha Devi Park passing the Colombo City Center building.

The proposed cycle path will then cut across the Vihara Maha Devi Park towards the Nelum Pokuna Theatre and will proceed towards the Borella Public Cemetary via Baudhdhaloka Mawatha passing the Colombo Arcade Building.

Phase 01 of the project will then proceed to the Colombo Golf Course and then towards Diyatha Uyana passing the Kotte Wetlands.

The cycle path will then be constructed to proceed around the Parliament and return to Diyatha Uyana.

Phase 02 will see the cycle path be constructed from Meethotamulla to the Floating market complex in Colombo via St. Sebastian Canal and the Hulftsdorf Court Complex.

According to the Government Information Department, 11 stations where bicycles can be rented out, will be positioned along with Phase 01.

A bicycle can be rented from any of these 11 stations and can be returned to any station along with Phase 01.

Considering the fact, most people would cycle early morning and in the evening, necessary lighting and coloring to avoid any unnecessary incident would be in place in accordance with international standards.

The project will commence at the end of 2020 and will be completed in 2021.
