PM speaks to Yameen and Solih and Nasheed, offers refuge to Yameen

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has spoken to outgoing Maldives President Abdulla Yameen and newly elected President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as well as former President Mohamed Nasheed.The Prime Minister’s office said that Wickremesinghe spoke to Yameen yesterday and congratulated him on ensuring a free and fair election.

Wickremesinghe had also told Yameen he would be welcome in Sri Lanka at any time.The Prime Minister had spoken to Maldives President elect Mohamed Solih today and congratulated him on his election. Last evening the Prime Minister had met former President Nasheed and discussed the developments in the Maldives.

The Prime Minister’s office said that Nasheed had noted the investments made by Sri Lankan businessmen in the Maldives and had urged Sri Lanka to investment more in his country. Nasheed also invited Wickremesinghe to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Maldivian President. Nasheed and several other Maldivian politicians have been taking refuge in Sri Lanka fearing arrest by Yameen’s Government.
