The Ceylon Teacher Services Union (CTSU) will refrain from conducting online teaching practices from today against the Government’s move to direct Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin and 15 others to forcible quarantine after being released on bail and until providing a solution for online teaching, CTSU Chief Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said.

He said CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin and 15 others from the group of 33 were arrested for staging a demonstration in Battaramulla and sent forcibly to quarantine centres after being released on bail.

Fourteen Trade Unions, including the CTU, CTSU have joined the trade union action, Mr. Jayasinghe said.

The Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF), the CTU and the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) had organized the protest against the proposed General Sir John Kotelawala National Defence University Bill on Tuesday (8).

“The power of the trade unions cannot be supressed by sending them to quarantine. Therefore, all teachers’ trade unions have decided to refrain from online teaching, as the teachers used to continue with online teaching with their own efforts and using their own facilities and emoluments.
