The United Kingdom celebrated Commonwealth Day on Sunday in a televised special celebrating the unity of the “worldwide family” amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Senior members of the royal family participated in pre-recorded messages of goodwill and also included performances by singers and musicians such as Nitin Sawhney and Lianne La Havas.

Former British Commonwealth Games champion Denise Lewis paid tribute to athletes for continuing to train, saying: “in the face of adversity, giving up was never an option.”

Patricia Scotland, the Commonwealth General-Secretary said the “joining together as a worldwide family, we build on shared inheritances that we cooperate with mutual respect and goodwill to deliver a common future for the good of all.”

The broadcast replaces the annual service at Westminster Abbey, which was cancelled due to COVID restrictions.
