Sri Lanka will import 15,000 dairy heifers in the next four years to promote liquid milk in the country, agriculture minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said.

“By 2024, we hope to make liquid milk available for at least 80 percent of the country,” he told Parliament.

Aluthgamage said that two companies have agreed to import 5000 dairy heifers and that a cabinet paper will be submitted next week on allocating lands for the cattle.

“It is private investors who will import these heifers and not the government,” the minister said insisting that the government will not intervene into the process.
