The Cabinet of Ministers has granted its approval to launch an accelerated programme for the provision of 150,000 new domestic water supply connections during the first two quarters of the year.

This decision was taken at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers held this week. The proposal for the programme has been tabled by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, as the Minister of Urban, Water Supply and Housing Facilities.

The Water Supply and Drainage Board has already supplied supply water connections to 2.4 million commuters covering 41% of the Sri Lankan population while adding 110,000 new domestic drinking water connections. However, supplying domestic drinking water connections to certain areas has become a challenge although there is an additional capacity, according to the government.
