Minister of Power and Energy Mahinda Amaraweera states that there won’t be any power cuts as long as they are in power.
Attending an event in Colombo on Thursday (Feb 13) the Minister noted that the administration of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa hopes to meet 70% of Sri Lanka energy needs by 2013 using greener technology. He noted that they have received substantial assistance from India to the tune of $100mn, for this initiative.
While stating that no power plants were built over the past 5 years, Amaraweera assured that power cuts will not take place under their watch. He went onto state that they hope to make the Ceylon Electricity Board profitable by 2023 while also lowering electricity prices.
When questioned about reports regarding Russia’s interest in building a nuclear power plant in Sri Lanka, the subject minister noted that there was no officials discussion held in this regard.
