“Mahawanshaya” to be declared World Heritage: UNESCO

UNESCO has decided to declare the “Mahawanshaya” as a World Heritage.

Accordingly, the “Mahawanshaya” currently kept at the library of the University of Peradeniya will be declared as a World Heritage.

The decision was reached by the UNESCO considering that all sections of the “Mahawanshaya” was correctly conserved at the University Library, Prof. Upul Dissanayake, the Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University told media.

Representatives of UNESCO have inspected other “Mahawanshaya” palm-leaf books located at various places in the country, but due to their shortcomings, they were deemed not eligible to be declared as World Heritage status.

“Mahawanshaya” is believed to have been written in the 13th century.
