The Department of Railways will launch a pilot project on Saturday (August 24) to move Colombo’s garbage to the Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill Site by train.

Railways General Manager Dilantha Fernando said on Saturday two garbage-filled lorries will be transported by train from Colombo to the Periya-Nagawil train station to explore the possibility of transporting garbage on that route without any issue as the route contains bridges and more train stations.

He went on to note a study will take place to understand what type of machinery should be used for this purpose. Based on the results of the pilot project, measures would be adopted to move Colombo’s garbage to the Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill site by train.
