Flying kites within a radius of five kilometres from any international airport were illegal and a punishable offence and people were requested to refrain from such acts, Airport Manager H.S. Hettiarachchi said.

He said flying kites within five kilometres from an airport could damage wings of the flights and other parts even causing plane crashes.

This restriction would be applicable for Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA), Colombo Airport – Ratmalana, Sigiriya Airport, Palaly Airport and Koggala Air Force Base.
