Army soldier, deserter caught with 45kg of heroin

A soldier and an army deserter were arrested with 45 kg of heroin while travelling in a van in Horana by the Panadura Anti-vice Narcotic Unit.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the van bore a bogus number plate to deceive others as it was an Army vehicle. The driver was also wearing an army uniform.

It was reported that the van entered the expressway at Imaduwa on the Southern Expressway and speeding towards Horana after having made its exit at the Galanigama.

The Spokesman said this was the fourth largest haul of narcotics seized within the period of approximately two months.

DIG Rohana said the Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva had also been informed about the raid.

He said the Army also conducting investigations into the narcotic seizure in addition to the police investigation.
