The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to impose a tax on substandard garments imported to the country, in order to encourage local manufacturers to expand the domestic market, Subject Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said on Saturday (Dec. 26).

“The tax on substandard garments imported to the country will come into effect from 1st April 2021,” Dayasiri Jayasekara, the State Minister of Batik, Handloom Fabric & Local Apparel Products told media.

According to State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, local manufacturers are facing severe difficulties due to the importation of substandard garments at low prices from foreign countries.

The State Minister was hopeful the tax would encourage local manufacturers to produce garments of better quality and expand the sector.
