COVID-19 cases from Sri Lankan prisons rise to 617

The total number of COVID-19 cases reported from Sri Lankan prisons has risen to 617 after another 63 cases were detected, the Prisons Department said on Saturday (Nov. 21).

Of the 617 cases recorded, 578 were inmates and 39 were Prison officials, Chandana Ekanayake, the Commissioner (Administration) of the Department of Prisons said.

The highest number of 236 cases were detected at the Welikada Prison.

Further, 170 cases were confirmed from the Old Bogambara Prison, 120 from the Colombo Remand Prison, 49 from the Boossa Maximum Security Prison, and 16 cases were from the Kuruvita Prison.

The infected inmates and the prison officials are receiving treatment at the Prison Hospitals located in Gallella, Welikanda, Kandakadu, and Welikada.

A total of 26 COVID-19 infected inmates and prison officials have so far recovered.

According to Chandana Ekanayake, the Commissioner (Administration) of the Department of Prisons, a committee has been appointed for the welfare of the COVID-19 infected prison officials.
