Quarantined individuals right to vote will be protected; NEC Chairman

Sri Lanka’s Election Chief called on politicians and the general public to strictly follow the health guidelines, so the NEC can conduct the Parliamentary Election on the 25th of July as planned.

Mahinda Deshapriya, the Chairman of the National Elections Commission urged health authorities to publish the gazette notification on the health regulations as soon as possible, adding it would be impossible to go ahead with the election in the absence of the respective gazette.

Deshapriya said all those placed in self-quarantine will be permitted to vote from 04 PM to 05 PM adding all measures will be in place to ensure their right to exercise their franchise.

He went on to note, there are provisions in the National Elections Act to go ahead with a staggered election.
