121 accidents, 14 deaths in the past 24-hours

A total of fourteen fatalities had been reported during the past 24 hours in road accidents across the country, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

“A total of 121 road accidents have taken place in various places across the country,” he said.

He said twelve accidents were reported on Expressways and 109 accidents on the other roads.

Meanwhile, a total of 14 deaths reported within the period of 24-hours in which 74 persons sustained injuries, he said.

According to him 53 motorcycle accidents and 33 three-wheeler accidents had been reported during the past 24-hours.
In other related developments, 758 drivers had been arrested for driving under influence of liquor.

“They will not be granted Police bail and the Police Stations had been directed not to release the vehicles.

“The drivers and the vehicles will be produced before the respective Magistrate Courts to initiate the legal process. 

“If a driver were found guilty, the person will be imposed a fine of Rs.25, 000 by the court and the court can suspend or cancel the driving license,” he said,

“Therefore, people were advised to take all preventive measures to ensure road safety,” DIG Rohana said.
