04 elevated railway tracks to address Colombo’s traffic jam

In a bid to further reduce the traffic congestion in Colombo and its suburbs, the cabinet approved the proposal for the construction of 04 elevated railway tracks within the Colombo City limits to address traffic congestion.

Joint-Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Udaya Gammanpila said the project will be carried out as a public-private partnership covering the Colombo Urban area and its suburbs.

These railway tracks will be color-coded as Red, Green, Blue, and Purple.

The 42 kilometers long Red Track will commence from Ragama to Kottawa via Pettah.

The 28 kilometers long Green Track will commence from Motaruwa to Kelaniya via Narahenpita.

The 23 kilomtetre long Blue Track will commence Kottawa to Hunupitiya via Isurupaya.

The Purple Track will be constructed from the Port City to Athurugiriya via Borella.

In addition, Cabinet approval WAS granted to allocate Rs. 2.8 Billion to the Urban Development Authority and the National Housing Development Authority to control the flood situation in Colombo city.

Speaking during the Cabinet media briefing today, Joint-Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Udaya Gammanpila said the move will help reduce the traffic congestion in Colombo.
