The police has decided to enforce strict measures against “fake” beggars in capital Colombo, to ease vehicle movement and curb the spread of COVID-19.

“We have identified various persons who are begging at junctions and traffic lights in the Colombo city and suburbs,” police spokesman Ajith Rohana said on Thursday.

“They do a business and are pretending as beggars.”

The spokesman added that individuals engaged in this act would be charged for cheating by impersonation and blocking roads.

He warned drivers and passengers against purchasing goods from individuals who sell products at traffic lights or junctions.

“If you do it, you might be a suspect of a court case and stern action will be taken against you,” Rohana pointed out.
