Prisoner who broke out of the Old Bogambara Prison, arrested

The prisoner who broke out of the Old Bogambara Prison early on Wednesday (18) was arrested, said the Department of Prisons.

The inmate will be placed in mandatory quarantine for a period of 14 days.

Authorities foiled a prison break attempt at the Old Bogambara Prison on Wednesday (18) morning.

05 inmates had attempted to scale the prison wall and make a getaway and during the attempt one of them had died and three others sustained injuries.

It is still unclear, as to how the prisoners attempted to reach the wall.

Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said shots were fired to prevent the prisoners from escaping and said the deceased prisoner was a 30-year-old from Anuradhapura.

Another prisoner had managed to escape during the melee and a wide manhunt was launched to locate and arrest the escapee, and he was arrested on Wednesday (18) afternoon.

Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said the prisoners who attempted the prison break were those incarcerated for drug offenses.
