The Cabinet of Minister approved to expedite the implementation of the Gin-Nilwala river diversion project proposed for optimal use of water from the Gin and Nilwala rivers.
The Gin -Nilwala project is implemented to control the floods in these rivers and to use the excess water to avoid the shortage of drinking and irrigation water in the Hambantota District.
The Gin and Nilwala rivers carry 2000 and 1200 cubic meters of water into the ocean, respectively.
