There is no decision to impose an island wide lockdown said Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.

Quarantine Curfew will be imposed for Fort, Pettah, Borella & Welikada police areas from 06:00 PM on Sunday (25) until further notice as some of the COVID-19 cases and close contacts reported on Saturday (24) are from those localities, said the Commander of the Army.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva who is also the Head of the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) said considering the population density in the areas the quarantine curfew will come into effect as there is a possibility of COVID-19 spreading.

He said the objective of imposing the Quarantine Curfew is to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus and urged the general public to comply with the health guidelines and regulations.

Noting there can be a COVID-19 case in those localities, the Army Commander said it is paramount for people to refrain from meeting others, until COVID-19 cases are detected and moved for immediate treatment.
