75% reduction in Dengue cases compared to 2019: NDCU

The rate of Dengue patients recorded in the country so far this year, has reduced by about 75% compared to that of last year, the National Dengue Control Unit said.

“There is usually a gradual increase in the rate of Dengue patients in the months of June, July, and August following the monsoon rain season, However, the rate of Dengue patients recorded since June this year, is not as high as expected,” Dr. Aruna Jayasekara, the Director of the National Dengue Control Unit told media on Monday (Aug 31).

Meanwhile, the National Dengue Control Unit will carry out special inspections to identify Dengue mosquito breeding grounds at schools, in line with COVID-19 control programmes.

According to Dr. Jayasekara, the inspections for Dengue breeding grounds will be conducted by Public Health Inspectors.

Dr. Jayasekara further emphasized that Dengue Eradication programmes will continue in order to prevent the spread of Dengue mosquitoes.

“Dengue eradication programmes were carried out in selected high-risk areas of the Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Kandy and Ratnapura districts on the 27th, 28th and 29th of August,” he further added.
