IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, who were ordered released on bail by the Colombo High Court, have been granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court as per the directive of the High Court.

When the application was taken up today before Colombo Additional Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage through a motion, Pujith Jayasundara and Hemasiri Fernando were both produced before the court.

The Magistrate then read out the bail order issued by the Colombo High Court.

Afterwards the magistrate ordered that the two defendants be released on bail and also instructed them to record statement at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) whenever they are summoned to do so.

The case was subsequently postponed to May 06.

Earlier today, the Colombo High Court had granted bail to IGP Pujith Jayasundara, who was sent on compulsory leave, and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, who were both arrested and remanded on charges with criminal negligence of duty by failing to prevent the Easter Sunday terror attacks despite having received intelligence information in advance.

They were each released on two cash bails of Rs. 250,000 and two personal bails of Rs. 2.5 million each. The defendants were also barred from leaving the country.

The High Court had ordered that copies of the bail orders be forwarded to the Registrar of the Colombo Magistrate’s Court as well.
