The National Secretariat for Elders in Sri Lanka notes that there are over 137,000 elders over the age of 70 years,  who are still waiting in line to obtain their senior citizen’s allowance.

The Secretariat noted that a majority of the delays have been caused by the lack of funding. A senior official at the secretariat noted that they had already requested the Government to make the necessary allocations.

The senior citizen’s allowance is currently being enjoyed by over 416,000 persons across the country. The secretariat also hopes to increase the Rs 2000 monthly allowance to Rs 2500.
