The Disaster Management Center (DMC) warns that the water level of the Mahaweli River is rising to minor flood level owing to the prevailing adverse weather conditions.

People living downstream of the river in Trincomalee and Polonnaruwa districts are advised to remain vigilant.

DMC deputy director Pradeep Kodippili stated that that the Mahaweli River is very close to reaching minor flood level at Weraganthota and Manampitiya areas.

Due to this, the people who are living close to the river banks at Welikanda, Seruwila, Muthur, Lankapura, Medirigiriya, Kinniya, Kantale, Thamankaduwa and Dimbulagala are advised to stay on alert.

Meanwhile the DMC says that people living in the low-lying areas near the Malwathu Oya are urged to remain cautious as the spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have been opened.
