Basil Rajapaksa permitted to travel to USA

The Colombo High Court today (November 28) granted permission for Minister Basil Rajapaksa to travel to the United States of America from the 05th of December till the 07th of March 2020 for medical reasons.

High Court judge Gihan Kulantunga thereby ordered for the evidence examination on the case filed against Basil Rajapaksa to take place on the 30th of March. The evidence examination was to take place today and tomorrow (November 29).

President’s Counsel Anil Silva appearing for Basil Rajapaksa requested court to postpone sittings as he could not seek instructions from his client. Deputy Solicitor General Sudardhana Silva appearing for the Attorney General did not oppose the request and therefore the case was postponed.

The case was filed against Basil Rajapaksa and former Director-General of the Divi Neguma Development Department, Kithsiri Ranawaka, over the printing of 5 million ‘Lith’ calendars or almanacs bearing the picture of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa spending 29.4 million rupees in funds belonging to the Divineguma Department during the 2015 Presidential election
