Former Minister Harin Fernando convened a media briefing in Colombo today. Addressing the media at the occasion, the former minister stated that Sajith Premadasa who contested for the presidential election would convene a media briefing tomorrow (Nov 21) at the UNP party headquarters Sirikotha.

He stated that he along with a number of other ministers resigned from their positions as they respect the public mandate and because wanted to create the necessary room for newly elected President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to carry out his activities. Fernando stated that he resigned from his position even before the final results were released.

Addressing individuals who claimed that, they had put Sajith Premadasa in trouble by requesting him to contest, Fernando reminded the trouble they had to go through inorder to get the party to endorse his presidential bid. The MP reminded those gathered that even though Gotabaya Rajapaksa was officially recognized as the SLPP’s presidential candidate on the 11th of August, it took the UNP nearly two months to name Sajith Premadasa as it’s candidate.

He went onto note that Sajith Premadasa held his first official election rally on the 10th of October in Galle Face and had to face the uphill battle of winning a presidential election in just over a month. He added that it is clear that Sajith Premadasa had to pay for the sins of the current Government even though he had no allegations against him.
