Malaria threat renewed

21 patients who entered the country with Malaria have been identified within the past year of which 10 have been identified as Sri Lankans.

The number of patients identified in 2018 was 48. The patients identified so far have reportedly arrived from Asian countries.

Sri Lanka was named as a malaria- free nation by the World Health Organization in 2016. However, Director of the anti-malaria campaign, Dr Hemantha Herath said that once again the risk of malaria spreading in the country is high with infected patients arriving in the country from foreign nations.
