The number of patients identified in 2018 was 48. The patients identified so far have reportedly arrived from Asian countries.

Sri Lanka was named as a malaria- free nation by the World Health Organization in 2016. However, Director of the anti-malaria campaign, Dr Hemantha Herath said that once again the risk of malaria spreading in the country is high with infected patients arriving in the country from foreign nations.
