Stranded trawlers begin journey from Maldives

The Fisheries Ministry states that Sri Lankan multi-day fishing trawlers that had crossed into Maldivian waters due to inclement weather, will begin their journey back to Sri Lanka today.

Director of Operations at the Department of Fisheries, Padmapriya Thisera stated that these fishing trawlers have been instructed to return as the inclement weather conditions have subsided.

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives to grant 20 multi-day fishing trawlers that were in international waters, permission to cross the Maldivian maritime boundary. The fishermen who entered into  Maldivian waters were facilitated by the Maldivian coast guard.
