The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday sought a detailed explanation as to how Rs.100 million was allocated to renovate the official residence of Public Enterprises Minister Lakshman Kiriella and also whether funds were released to purchase a bullet-proof vehicle for Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“Rs.76 million had earlier been allocated for the official residence of the Public Enterprises Minister. An additional Rs.19.9 million has been allocated from the recently presented supplementary estimate. The government should explain how such a huge amount of money was allocated to it,” JVP MP Bimal Ratnayake said.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said the matter can be taken up at the consultative committee.

Public Enterprises Minister Lakshman Kiriella said supplementary estimates were prepared by the finance ministry and that the ministry would be asked to give explanations.

Meanwhile, MP Ratnayake also urged the government to explain if the funds had been allocated from the recently presented supplementary estimate to purchase a bullet-proof vehicle for Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“The government should explain if the funds allocated was for a bullet-proof vehicle for Mr. Rajapaksa,” he asked.

He told parliament that the government should explain on the subjects for which funds were allocated from the supplementary estimate.
