The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is attempting to unite the Government via its no-confidence motion (NCM) against the Government which is on the verge of a severe split subsequent to our NCM against Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, MP Lakshman Yapa said yesterday.

He told a news briefing that the actual purpose of the JVP’s NCM was to bring the scattered government MPs together and uphold the unity in the Government.

“This is not the first time that the JVP has acted on behalf of the government. However, the move of this nature is somewhat surprising and has not been done by the JVP before,” the MP said and added that that if the JVP was keen on bringing a NCM against the government, the JVP should have discussed the matter with them. But it had not done so.

“There is visible division in the Government. A faction of UNP MPs including Catholic MPs have already announced that they would vote in favor of NCM,” he said and added that certain government MPs were publicly criticizing the government.

The MP requested the government to step down without dragging the country into anarchy.
