Captain leads Sri Lanka to a good win

Leading from the front with a good inning which anchored his team, Karunaratne’s 77 played a key role in Sri Lanka’s win over Scotland in Edinburgh last evening.

Avishka Fernando’s maiden ODI half century and an aggressive 56 ball 66 from Kusal Mendis helped Sri Lanka to 322 for 8 in their 50 overs. Sri Lanka who was cruising at 200 for one ran into a few hiccups with the dismissal of Karunaratne.

The experienced Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews came and went in quick succession scoring just two runs between them and using up 12 balls in the process.

Thirimanne with a good 44 kept the lower order together with some lusty hitting by Isuru Udana to ensure Sri Lanka got over the 300 mark.

Starting confidently Scotland succumbed to a combination of rain interruptions, a tough required run rate and some good bowling spearheaded by Nuwan Pradeep ( 4-34 in 7 overs) fell short of the Duckworth Lewis target of 235 off 34 overs, to be all out for 199. Giving the Sri Lankans a 35 run win.
